Abusive parents locked boy in a room for 12 years as a child, at 27 he escaped

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Stories like the “Wolfpack” a documentary about 6 brothers who were locked up in their New York apartment for 14 years seem like something that should be a rarity.

But apparently it’s not as uncommon as most people think.

Jiang is a 27 year old man who was locked up in a 8 foot by 8 foot room during most of his childhood. He lived in that room and never left it for 12 years. Eventually his parents would allow him to step out of his prison into the living room, but then they would forbid him from speaking and would slam his head into the wall if he made any noise.

Eventually, when he was 21 years old Jiang’s parents allowed him to leave the apartment and work part time jobs. All the money was taken by his parents. However, because his parents kept his national ID card Jiang was never able to apply for better paying jobs.

Then Jiang made a friend and the two eventually began dating. The girlfriend encouraged him to apply to the government for his national ID and emergency housing, so he could escape his abusive parents.

Jiang has officially made the break from his parents and said he’s never going back to the apartment where he grew up. He’s also going to apply to change his name, he said he doesn’t want to keep either of his parents’ surnames.
